From the very first sip, an understanding can be reached – quality fruit from the best vineyards bring the best blends. Plush yet proportioned, the Genoa XVI delivers a meditative experience. Dark coffee and fig notes are at the leading edge with kirsch and boysenberries soon to follow. Hints of star anise followed by undertones of juniper and cedar provide fragrance and lift. Full-bodied but balanced, no element strays too far from the core. The result is a seamless and velvety texture not easily accomplished, but greatly enjoyed.

Blending Zinfandel and Petite Sirah in various parts of California has become a regional calling card. After considering the fine points of the 2014 Night Watch, it all makes sense. A lavender and white pepper nose are a prelude to the cherry and blueberry density. Dried cranberries and dark plums add layers to a structured body. The tannins and acidity are evident but mellow resulting in a rounded and lasting finish. Paso Robles provenance and an emerging tradition make for a resounding and trailblazing blend. This blend is robust but deeply earthy, characterized by savory layers of fruit. Concentrated, sumptuous, and textured, but also loaded with fruit, the Syrah component really shines through. Sleek tannins and acidity frame blackberries, pomegranate, and wild strawberries rushing the mid-palate as black pepper and briar notes appear. Integration of the succulent with the savory elements is well accomplished towards a contoured and lasting finish.

2015 X-Series Estate Caladoc
With the Sextant Caladoc, the revered wine regions of Bordeaux, Mendoza, La Mancha, Southern Rhone, and Southwest France come into play, either Grenache or Malbec having made their mark accordingly. The crossing of these two varietals gives way to a different and distinct vine laden with it’s own singular profile. Expressive contours lead the way: wild blackberries, cranberries, and black cherries at the front; loganberries and nutmeg at the mid-palate; carobs, lavender, and graphite at the periphery. Add balanced acidity to roll with smooth tannins, this wine proves rustic and modern; reserved and forward; delectable and complex, all at the same time. Finally, the lengthy finish glides along, then tapers, reminiscent of certain regional traditions but with a fresh new take.
