Winery
Located in the Spanish archways of El Paseo, Margerum Wine Company is one of Santa Barbara's premier tasting rooms. This location features a mission style tasting bar, friendly staff and acclaimed wines. Enjoy a classic tasting flight ($15), reserve tasting flight ($15) or wines by the glass. Winemaker Doug Margerum is using his experience in the restaurant industry to produce wines that pair well with food. In 2016 Margerum's Sybarite Sauvignon Blanc was served at a White House State Dinner. Many of the press pictures feature President Barack Obama toasting the Prime Minister of Singapore with the Sauvignon Blanc in hand. Margerum hosts two tasting rooms in El Paseo. This location can be reserved for private events and is the first to fill on weekends. Margerum’s reserve tasting room is located down the Spanish corridor and offers the same tasting flights and prices.

AMAROHouse recipe (grape neutral spirits) with herbs (sage, thyme, marjoram, parsley, lemon verbena, rosemary, and mint), barks, roots, dried orange peels, and caramelized simple syrup. Aged in cask outdoors. Final result is 23% alcohol.

2015 Barden ChardonnayColor: Gold with green and yellow hues. Aroma: Very aromatically complex with sweet slightly tropical fruits with layers of sweet butter, toast and cream. Palate: A balanced approach between fruit and minerality. There is an earthiness balanced with white pear, bready texture and a high-toned nerviness. Rich and expansive with good acidity and a long finish.

2015 Barden FonteColor: Pale golden yellow. Aroma: Brioche, toasted vanilla bean, candied apple and short bread. Palate: Bartlett pear and tropical fruits, baked brie, raw almonds, a hint of Vanilla bean with lemon zest gives salivating acidity and a creaminess that will increase over time.

2013 Barden SyrahColor: Dark Carmine (the general term for some deep red colors that are very slightly purplish) and a blackish hue. Aroma: Plums spice and dried fruits coupled with a myriad of barrel complexities. There are all of the cold climate Syrah signatures - bacon fat, rare roast beef, peppercorns (white, and black) with earthiness. Palate: Rich and savory with an abundance of fruit, soft tannins, and plenty of pepper and spice. Balanced, firm, and polished – a wine that serves well with appropriate cuisine but will be at its best with some aging in a cool dark cellar.

There are flavors of red & black fruits, espresso, and dark chocolate with notes of aniseed & wood; combined in an intricate weave of savory and spice.

2014 Buoni Anni BiancoThe Pinot Grigio brings a lean tight, bold, intensity and grape flavors with lovely textured fruit. There are notes of melon and herbs; full and fleshy with lovely depth. The Pinot Bianco is fresh, focused and citrusy with lovely oak notes added to the intense, concentrated fruit. The Tocai Fruiliano is very pure with lemon, herbs and a richer texture. The resulting blend is intensely colored – green, gold, and grassy hues. The wine is rich, toasty, tight and powerful. It’s a bold wine with great focus and silkiness and marries perfectly with appropriate cuisine.

2014 Klickitat Pinot GrisColor: Straw tinged, bright and vibrant. Aroma: With the first swirl aromas of poached pear, brioche toast and apple leap from the glass. Add aromas akin to the red basalt that the vines are grown and the result is a framework for the aroma profile. Palate: An explosion of citrus, blood orange, and finger limes combined with wet river stone minerality provide a lean, focused, mouthfeel. The high natural acidity, forms a linear focus, whilst barrel aged Lees contact provides a slight velvety texture rounding out palate.

2013 Late Harvest Sauvignon BlancMargerum Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc is from a section of the vineyard that was set aside for the production of this wine. Ideal growing conditions allowed for full flavor and sugar ripeness from exposed bunches, while retaining acid from the shaded bunches. The grapes were hand-picked in perfect condition and then crushed, pressed, and fermented at a very cool temperature for three weeks. The wine has intense varietal aromas, a luscious mouth feel with a clean finish.

The overlying presence of Grenache flavors initially impacts the palate, followed by a finish complete with hints of jam, cocoa and dark berry contributions of Syrah and earthy Mourvèdre.

As the wine opens there are layers of charcuterie, raw meats and country brush. Palate: Full bodied and refined, rich, blueberry and dried fruits. Concentrated juicy mid palate encompassed by cola and sweet fruit. Dusty tannins complete the framework. The density, texture and depth of this wine are a testament to the quality of the vineyard. The finish is long and lingering with appealing notes coffee and vanilla. Drink this wine now or age it up to ten years.
