Located on Hidden Mountain Road, DAOU has been a cult favorite with wine affiants for years. The label has gained notoriety for Bordeaux varietals that are grown on a mountain top in the Adeladia District. The tasting room sits at 2220 feet, with white couches and a back lit onyx tasting bar. This location has seating for small groups on the terrace, which is perfect for summer weather. Our photos were taken in December and we arrived to a picturesque fire place. This location accepts walk-ins but reservations are needed for groups larger than 8. Enjoy a tasting flight for $40 which includes two single varietals and three blends. Food items are available to patrons who make additional wine purchases beyond the tasting flight. The menu includes plates to share like bacon rapped dates, charcuterie, and cheese plates. Entrées include crab cakes, slow braised sort ribs, and filet mignon. Minors are not welcome at this time and pets must remain on the patio. Advance reservations are needed for tours with Catherine Daou ($70).

  • 2013 Anderson Road
Anderson Road is a creative blend Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, fortified with bit of Petite Sirah.  This is a more challenging full bodied wine, made of three forceful varietals. It offers tannic structure from the Cabernet and Syrah, balanced by the focused acids of the Petite Sirah.  The alcohol content blended out to 14.7%.  This is not necessarily the wine for a novice, but it has consistently been one of our most popular blends, and sells out early. A side dish of beef and hard cheese will smooth out the tannins.
  • 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is infused with small amounts of Tanat and Merlot.  Science tells us that everything is better with a little blend.  The Merlot rounds out the flavor profile of the Cab, while the Tanat reinforces the tannic structure.  The base line varietal is a blend of two different vineyards.  Both enjoyed a long hang time to allow the fruit to ripen to full flavor.  This is yet another stellar Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • 2013 Daou Estate Soul of a Lion
The 2013 DAOU Estate Soul of a Lion shows beautiful depth of color. The black velvety core leads to aromas of early spring violets, crushed blueberries, and shaved chocolate. The palate is seductively balanced by the unique tartness of black raspberries and concentrated oral complexity of crème de cassis. Nuanced vanilla bean, cedar forest floor, and spiced tobacco round out the spectrum flavors. Integrated tannins, bright acidity, and moderate alcohol naturally extend into a seamless finish that lingers on the senses. Made from maturing vines, this wine showcases the best of DAOU Mountain terroir.

  • 2012 Estate Mayote
Aromas of black currants and crushed blueberries invite you to explore the complexity and depth of this alluring wine. Black plums and blackberries greet your palate as a revue of flavors follow: peppercorns, cedar box, tobacco leaves, ash, licorice, and spice all make their debut and linger just long enough for you to know they were there. Bright acidity and firm, open tannins combine to create a seamless texture that balances intense fruit with DAOU Mountain structure
  • 2013 Estate Mayote
  • 2013 Estate Micho
A beautiful display of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a seamless blend that is inky, purple color with the structure needed to let it evolve nicely for years to come. This wine is lush with velvety tannins and intense plum, blackberry, cassis with highlights of olives, herbs and sweet oak. Approachable now, it will reward you with even more pleasure with some years in the bottle.
  • 2015 Eye Of The Falcon Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 2013 Grenache
Grenache bottling was an innovation for Dark Star.  We were fortunate to receive a good supply of fruit from our regular grower, beyond our regular blending needs, and thought we would see what we could do with it.  We concentrated it a little by juice extraction at the crush, and blended in some Syrah and Zinfandel.  The result was exceptional, and is turning out to be very popular in the tasting room.  Distributors are swooning over it.  This wine is at the approachable end of our spectrum, and pairs well with lighter fare.
  • 2013 Left Turn
Left Turn is one of our creative California blends;  it crosses the boundaries imposed by old world regulations.  The 2013 edition has turned even a little more left than usual.  The base blend is a Rhone style predominated by Grenache and Syrah, but we supplement this with a healthy percentage of Zinfandel plus a touch of Merlot and Petite Syrah.  This is one of our softer wines, not as tannic as our Bordeaux blends, smooth enough to pair with delicate dishes, but with enough spice to stand up to a robust marinara sauce.  The 14.alcohol is well balance by fruit and soft acids on the palate.
  • 2013 Merlot
Merlot sometimes does not get the respect it deserves.  People tend to blame it on "that movie," but who knows?  In any event, Merlot has been a popular varietal for centuries, and will be with us for a long time.  In fact, if you go buy a very expensive bottle of imported right-bank Bordeaux, it will be mostly be made of Merlot.  This is a later harvest Merlot, with velvety tannins and lush stone fruit and blackberry aromas.  There is a very limited supply of 2013 Merlot, and once again the 2014 harvest conditions cruelly preclude a 2014 bottling.
  • 2014 Montepulciano Magnum
We are excited to introduce our first exotic wine, Montepulciano.  This is a fabulous Tuscan varietal, with a unique flavor profile.  We are offering only a limited bottling of 50 cases of the 2014 vintage, but will be back with a larger release of the 2015 vintage.
  • 2013 Reserve Aux
  • 2014 Reserve Chardonnay
This rich and voluptuous wine offers aromas of lemon, peach, vanilla and toasty oak. Floral and spicy notes of honeysuckle, star jasmine, nutmeg and almond follow. Lush, weighty, and mouth- filling on the palate. A silky smooth texture delivers flavors of pineapple, lemon cream pie, honeydew melon and sweet ginger. Secondary layers reveal hints of toffee, hazelnut and toast. The finish is graceful and elegant, with essences of papaya and spiced apple, and a perfect crispness at the end.

  • 2013 Reserve Seventeen Forty
This is a full-bodied wine that exhibits high-class aromas of black currants, coffee bean, crushed flowers, and hints of dark chocolate. Seamless on the palate, it starts with black fruit flavors, builds on silky tannins, and finishes with notes of vanilla, olives, and licorice. Throughout, it is fresh, elegant and shows bright fruit accompanied with great acidity.

  • 2012 Reserve Zinfandel
The nose is treated to aromas of steeped strawberries and crushed red plums with hints of Asian spices to be discovered. This wine shows ripe fruit with restrained structure and the balance is consistent with DAOU winemaking. The palette is treated to a diverse selection of red fruits, free-run strawberries, red currents, and hints of Bing cherries. The oak flavors showcase the affinity Zinfandel has for added structure, and the maintained acidity helps keep this wine bright and balanced.
  • 2013 Reserve Zinfandel
  • 2014 Ricordati
Ricordàti is our signature Bordeaux blend.  It is a classic lower left bank style made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Tannat. The name means "remember" in Italian, a tribute to those who have passed from our lives.  This is a wine lover's wine.  The robust Cabernet Sauvignon is softened and supplemented by the Merlot and the Cab Franc, then fortified with Tannat.  It is hard to offer pairing suggestions on this;  once I start on a bottle, food just seems so irrelevant.

  • 2014 Soft Shoulder
Soft Shoulder is back by popular demand.  This GSM blend is predominately Grenache at 55%, blended with Syrah at 36% and Mourvedre at 9%.  This will be one of our softer wines.
  • 2014 Syrah
Our 2014 Syrah is sourced from two highly regarded west-side vineyards along Vineyard Drive.  We have blended in a touch of Grenache/ just because a little blend is always better.
  • 2013 Zinfandel
Our 2013 Zinfandel is a blend from our own estate vineyard and nearby west-side vineyards.  The fruit was harvested overnight, and passed cold across two sorting tables to assure quality and eliminate excess raisins sometimes found in Zinfandel; the result is more elegant and not so jammy as one sometimes finds in a warm climate Zinfandel.  After the sort, we did an extended cold maceration before bringing the wine up to a strictly controlled fermentation temperature.  The wine aged in barriques bordelaises, at approximately 20% new oak.  This is a robust wine with a fairly high alcohol content, and therefore a favorite of our staff.  Pair this with hearty foods.
