A study in extremes, this year’s Luna Matta Aglianico is another blockbuster-styled westside Paso red. We’ve slightly shifted our winemaking technique (very delicate extraction, extended maceration, etc.) over the years to tame the beast inside this wine, yet it remains every bit the highlight of intensity in our lineup. A strong showing of cassis and classically Cabernet Sauvignon blue fruit preludes the more serious nature of the 2014. It’s pure aromas swirl with black cherry and a subtle vanillin and cola oak-tinged spice. We’ve purchased fruit from many of the regions greatest vineyards, like Saxum’s James Berry vineyard. We’ve bought grapes from vineyards that no one knows but us. We pick grapes by hand and drive them to our small winery in the back of our old chevy truck. We foot stomp grapes when the skins are too thick and the grapes too small for any other crush method to work. We’ve left juice on the skins for months to transform them and build long silky tannins. We’ve made wines where the only added ingredient is grapes..

A product of a very low-yielding vintage, the 2015 il campo rosso expresses intense and vibrant sangiovese, barbera and aglianico. While no variety overwhelms, it is anchored in Sangiovese’s tart-cherry and dried floral character. The bright fruit belies its sunny Paso origin, but its dry and structured finish echoes its Italian inspiration. Our everyday table red.
