Understanding Appellations and American "AVA".
An appellation is a geographical region where grapes are grown. The rules that govern appellations are dependent on the country in which the wine is produced.
Winemakers must also meet requirements for grape yields, alcohol level and varietal type. These standards must be satisfied before a producer can use the appellation on a wine label.
The American Viticultural Area ("AVA") is for the United States. Wines that designate a region must source 85% of the grapes used from the geographical AVA
